Webster technique is a specific chiropractic analysis and adjustment + soft tissue therapy protocol used in treating pregnant patients. The goal of the treatment is to reduce the effects of sacral misalignment and/or SI joint dysfunction. As a result of treatment, neuro-biomechanical function in the pelvis is improved, and the baby has a more comfortable environment to reside in- resulting in decreased discomfort for mom.

Dr. Larry Webster, founder of the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association developed this protocol as a safe means to restore proper pelvic balance and function. Patients are assessed for biomechanical restrictions, and treatment will focus on the area of misalignment including the soft tissue (ie. ligaments and muscles) of the surrounding area.

Common symptoms treated with chiropractic during pregnancy include (but are not limited to) low back pain, sciatic neuralgia, and symptoms associated with sacral misalignment and/ or SI joint dysfunction. By addressing the biomechanical restrictions within the pelvis, a more comfortable environment is created for the baby.

What to Expect

Chiropractic care is safe and recommended throughout pregnancy. As your baby grows, your body works hard to adapt to this change. As a result, increased stress is placed on the low back, leading to postural adaptations. Treatment can improve your joint mechanics and decrease the stress placed on the spine and surrounding musculature.

During the first appointment, Dr. Hamilton will assess your biomechanics, and areas of concern. Treatment involves gentle adjustments and mobilizations, and soft tissue therapy. Dr. Hamilton will also provide safe exercise recommendations to help strengthen important muscle groups which will support you as you move, and ensure you are prepared for heavy lifting once the baby arrives.

When should I book an appointment?

Chiropractic care is beneficial at all stages of pregnancy. As your body is constantly changing and responding, you should not wait until you are feeling pain before coming in for treatment.

The typical chiropractic care schedule for pregnant moms is very closely related to the appointments they attend with their other care providers (midwives, OBGYNs).

For the first 6 months, 1-2 times per month is all we need to keep an eye on the pelvic structures and maintain their function and balance. Depending on how your biomechanics change, and symptoms progress, during months, 7 and 8 the optimal schedule is once per week or biweekly and for the last month leading up to delivery its best to check the pelvic joints 1-2 times a week..
